Scott Mills speaks to Lady Gaga. The following interview contains the use of very strong language and discussions of a sexual nature – if you are easily offe…

When her label, Epic Records, pressured Sara Bareilles to write a love song for them, she responded with one giant middle finger of an anti-love song back, creating one of the biggest songs of the 2000s – all by herself. That song, “Love Song,” catapulted Sara into the spotlight and radio stations everywhere, becoming a bold declaration of artistic independence and establishing her as a peerless combo of vocal heft and songwriting talent. Its defiant lyrics and infectious melody earned her a Grammy nomination and proved the importance of staying true to yourself.

Her journey from breakout hit songstress to one of the most respected singer-songwriters of her generation by her peers (and getting serious kudos from Carole King and Elton John for her covers of their songs) is a testament to her authenticity and immense talent, being self-trained as a vocalist and pianist. Her music is a masterful interplay of vulnerability, sheer vocal power, wit, and emotional depth, as seen on gut-wrenching ballads like “Gravity” to empowering FU anthems like “King of Anything.” Her knack for melodicism without any need for other songwriters further demonstrates this natural talent.

Sara has gone beyond writing songs destined for the charts, but also through her work on Broadway’s Waitress, with songs like “She Used to Be Mine” becoming a modern Broadway classic. The success of Waitress earned her Tony and Grammy nominations, further cementing her as a multi-dimensional artist. Sara is known for her powerful live performances (notably her cover of Sia’s “Chandelier”) and is always in demand for tribute concerts and cover performances.

It is tough to narrow it down to just ten songs, but here are ten of our favorites, not ranked of course:
0:00 Bottle It Up (2007) – Little Voice
0:07 Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (2013) – Brave Enough: Live at the Variety Playhouse
0:14 Uncharted (2010) – Kaleidoscope Heart
0:20 I Choose You (2013) – The Blessed Unrest
0:26 Gonna Get Over You (2010) – Kaleidoscope Heart
0:32 King of Anything (2010) – Kaleidoscope Heart
0:39 Brave (2013) – The Blessed Unrest
0:44 She Used to Be Mine (2015) – What’s Inside: Songs from Waitress
0:48 Gravity (2007) – Little Voice
0:55 Love Song (2007) – Little Voice

Watch Sheryl Crow play at the Tiny Desk.

More from NPR Music:
Tiny Desk Concerts: https://www.npr.org/tinydesk
Twitter: https://twitter.com/nprmusic
Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nprmusic

This Tiny Desk concert was part of Tiny Desk Fest, a four-night series of extended concerts performed in front of a live audience and streamed live on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

Dec. 3, 2019 | Stephen Thompson — “I heard a big thing on NPR about the shrinking of the attention span and how now, with pop songs, everything has like six seconds before you gotta change it, because the kids swipe over,” Sheryl Crow tells the crowd early in her Tiny Desk Fest concert. “I’m just gonna tell you right now: We’re dinosaurs. … And while the kids are all writing fast food — which is super-cool ’cause it tastes great, super-filling — we’re sort of still writing salmon. We’re the songwriters that are here to tax your attention span.”

Twenty-five years ago this fall, Crow was in the midst of a massive career breakthrough: Her inescapable hit “All I Wanna Do” was entrenched in the Top 5 — it would later win the Grammy for Record of the Year — and her 1993 debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club, was well on its way to selling more than 7 million copies in the U.S. alone. The years since have been similarly kind. A heavily decorated but eternally approachable star, Crow has released 11 albums and won nine Grammys en route to her latest, a duets collection called Threads.

For NPR’s Tiny Desk Fest, Crow and her crack band of rock-and-roll lifers performed a 35-minute set (including two unexpected encores) that featured new material from Threads and a handful of hits that have morphed over the years into pop standards. From the easygoing opening strains of “All I Wanna Do” to the rousing final notes of “If It Makes You Happy,” we were in some of the surest hands in the business.

SET LIST
“All I Wanna Do”
“A Change Would Do You Good”
“Prove You Wrong”
“Tell Me When It’s Over”
“Cross Creek Road”
“Out Of Our Heads”
“If It Makes You Happy”

Lyrics/Letra:

Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera

Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera

El día está pa’ bote y playa
El día está pa’ bote y playa
Y para pasarme de la raya.
En la arena sobre la toalla,
Ese plancito nunca falla.
Esta nena tiene fans
Y el corazón partío, como Sanz
Muchos son los que me tiran, pero
Pocos son los que me dan.

Soy selectiva, poca trayectoria,
Normal,
Por razones obvias
Al amor le cogí fobia,
Perro que me escriba pantallazo y pa’ su novia
Nadie va a decirme cómo me debo comportar
Pueden opinar, pero

Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera
Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera

Con vista al mar, reservé el hotel
Ya me prendí con un solo coctel
Me puse poca ropa pa’ mostrar la piel
La abeja reina está botando miel

Aun huele a verano aquí
¿Qué tiene de malo? Sí,
Eso es para usarlo y

Mi cuerpo está diciendo…

Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera

Aun huele a verano aquí
¿Qué tiene de malo? Sí
Eso es para usarlo y

Mi cuerpo está diciendo…

Aun huele a verano aquí
Y eso es para usarlo, si
Hoy algo me gano aquí,

Ay,

Ahh, se pasa rico soltera
Y ahora las lobas…

Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Estoy suelta y ahora
Puedo hacer lo que quiera
Se pasa rico soltera

Ay que rico…mira que rico
Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Pa’ que ese cabrón
Cuando me vea le duela
Se pasa rico soltera

Yo tengo derecho de portarme mal
Pa’ pasarla bien
Pa’ que ese cabrón
Cuando me vea le duela
Se pasa rico soltera

Lyrics:

You’re everything I thought you never were
And nothing like I thought you could have been
But still you live inside of me,
So tell me how is that?

You’re the only one I wish I could forget
The only one I love to not forgive
And though you break my heart,
You’re the only one

And though there are times when I hate you
‘Cause I can’t erase
The times that you hurt me and put tears on my face
And even now, while I hate you,
It pains me to say
I know I’ll be there at the end of the day

I don’t wanna be without you, babe
I don’t want a broken heart
Don’t wanna take a breath without you, babe
I don’t wanna play that part
I know that I love you, but let me just say
I don’t wanna love you in no kind of way, no no
I don’t want a broken heart
I don’t wanna play the broken-hearted girl
No, no, no broken-hearted girl
I’m no broken-hearted girl
